My Ways to Draw Godzilla and other kaiju

Some coloring pages on Google like this Godzilla 2000 or Kiryu Goji Godzilla 2002-2003 page will do the trick. I and you can use a coloring page as a tutorial, guide and template.

Are you having trouble on how to draw Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan, Gigan, Anguirus, Megalon, Battra, SpaceGodzilla, Destoroyah, Dagahra, Zilla, Mechagodzilla especially Kiryu? Couldn’t find the right tutorial. Well have no fear, help is here! In this blog, I will show you how to draw kaiju and tips, life hacks, secrets, & tricks.

First of all consider who or which monster you decided to draw a picture of. Let’s say you want to draw Godzilla (the one pictured above.) So all you need is this coloring page, a piece of paper (printer paper or scratch paper from school or college’s learning centers and libraries), the best pencils and pens, coloring pencils, and a blue pen to help you see the lines. I call it blueprint style. Godzilla (Millennium or Kiryu Goji) has sharp dorsal plates so I will get to that part. To start out, draw some circles and ovals. Once you are done with the body structure, add in details such as plates, bumps, scales, ridges, sharp teeth, eyes, claws, tail, and and wrinkles. I usually draw mine lifelike. If you want it lifelike, put more details and shading. I always have fun drawing Millennium or Kiryu Godzilla’s plates because they are like tree stars or maple leaves but a lot sharper. The other Godzillas have rounded edges or semi-sharp edges just like the Heisei ones and Shin Godzilla. Shin Godzilla is a hard one so I found a secret on how to draw this one easier; use the one from the Shin Chan episode. In the film, Shin Godzilla does posses a mouth on the end of his tail for more atomic heat rays to shoot out. So I add a mouth with sharp teeth. I have also used the picture from the Cool Tokyo Guide book which depicts the Godzilla Hotel (Hotel Gracery Shinjiku)  and clipart images off Google and Bing and Yahoo images. They have the body structure and shape we need in order to draw our Godzillas.

Shin Godzilla in final form can be difficult but use this rendition from Shin Chan so you can add details.

As for other kaiju such as Mothra, Neosaurus from Ultraman Dyna, Battra, King Ghidorah, Gappa, Gamera, Zigra, Guiron, SpaceGodzilla, etc. I have found some useful templates on the internet. Here are my list of ways.

  1. Type http://www.google.co.jp, on that search bar type in the name of the monster in Japanese, and then start looking. Those searches has even more accurate resources on who are you looking for.
  2. A coloring page and then print it so you can draw and copy as a template.
  3. Simply type in the name of the beast in English. You can also print it out.
  4. Some YouTube videos on YouTube shows you how to draw them. I found some with Burning Godzilla Eternal Mothra Gigan Destoroyah   Biollante  Mothra , Mechagodzilla Kiryu in them. If Kiryu gets too challenging to draw, I use this video on how to draw this version of Dragon Ceasar and Dragonzord so I use the outline as a template.
  5. Good news I have found some rare Godzilla coloring pages and storybook pages that are on my Pinterest board. You can use them. Also use this page and this Mothra board  for drawing inspirations.
  6. The book “You Can Draw Manga” by Ben Dunn is the best book on how to draw. You can also buy it online off Amazon.  I suggest picking it up.

Like all drawings, it does not have to be perfect. You can add your own embellishment and rendition.

This drawing of Mothra is not perfect but it is up to you own how to draw her.

Now there you have it, my advice on kaiju drawings. So get creative, use your imagination, get creative, and have fun!
